Harriet and John were living together in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada in 1861, with three children, Thomas, 13, Ellen, 9, and Harriet, 1, all born in Canada, per Canada census. Harriet was still living in St. Catharines on 20 Jan 1866, per her father's probate records. By 1870 she was living in Buffalo, with her children Thomas and Eleanor. Her husband was not present. In the 1880 census she is listed as married (not widowed), though her husband was again not present. She remained in Buffalo until her death in 1892. Her death notice calls her the widow of John Fitzgerald, late of St. Catharines, Ontario.

Her husband was probably the John Fitzgerald who died in Lincoln [next to St. Catharines], Ontario, Canada, 22 May 1891, aged 79 years, born in Ireland.

Research Notes:

In 1861 Harriet was living in St. Catharines, Lincoln, Canada West, Canada, age 36, born in the states, baptist, with her husband, John Fitzgerad, wagon maker, age 41, born in Ireland, Roman Catholic. The following children were living in the household: Thomas, age 13, Ellen, age 9, and Harriet, age 1, all born in Canada West, all surname Fitzgerald.

In 1870 Harriet was living in Buffalo, age 45, born New York, with Thomas Fitzgerald, age 23, born Canada West, book keeper, and Eleanor Fitzgerald, age 17, born Canada West. The father of Thomas and Eleanor was "of foreign birth." John Fitzgerald was not present.

In 1875 the same family unit was living in Buffalo, with Harriet identified as the mother of Thomas and Eleanor. Also living in the household was Byron H. Westcott, age 24, cousin.

In 1880 Harriet was again in Buffalo, age 56, born New York, married (not widowed), living with the head of household Thomas Fitzgerald, 33, born Canada, book keeper, father born in Ireland.

There is a death record in Lincoln, Ontario, Canada for John Fitzgerald, died 22 May 1891, aged 79 years, born Ireland, Roman Catholic. This record is cited in two family trees on Ancestry.com as the death for John Fitzgerald, spouse of Harriet Westcott. Lincoln, it should be noted, is adjacent to St. Catharines, and a short distance from Buffalo, New York.¹

Harriets death notice states that she died on 26 Oct 1892 in Buffalo, aged 67 years 1 months 27 days, the widow of John Fitzgerald, late of St. Catharines, Ontario. Funeral to take place in the household of her daughter, Mrs. Edward Fairbairus, 539 Ashland, Ave, Buffalo.²
